Senior Database & Monitoring Application Engineer

The Senior Database & Monitoring Application Engineer is a highly knowledgeable member of a team responsible for developing MySQL database and remote site monitoring infrastructure solutions that meet or exceed business performance expectations.  The position is responsible for maintaining and developing a Configuration Management Database (CMDB) and creating the necessary tools to manage and maintain the design using Percona MySQL Server.  The Senior Database & Monitoring Application Engineer is responsible for database configurations, installations, maintenance, lifecycle, as well as the monitoring architecture and design for managed devices.

The member of this team will work closely with other team members to develop automation strategies and deployment processes.


Essential Functions of the Sr. Database & Monitoring Application Engineer:

  • Design and develop infrastructure monitoring and reporting tools.
  • Create tools to help teams make the most out of the available infrastructure.
  • Respond to phone calls, email, and technical requests in a timely manner.
  • Interpret customer requirements and translate those requirements into a functioning and manageable database design.
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with our database vendor and support contract.
  • Develop support processes for network engineers and help desk personnel to access stored data through custom SQL reports, online linux CLI tools, and web interfaces.
  • Develop documentation and training material on custom database applications.
  • Create tools and scripts to allow management of network configuration and other data by internal company personnel.
  • Assist network engineers with questions related to ongoing support and change requests of database schemas and functions.
  • Continuing education to maintain MySQL database expertise and knowledge of current and emerging open-source database technologies.
  • Establish standards and procedures for best practices involving databases and data management related issues.

Job Requirements

Qualifications of the Sr. Database & Monitoring Application Engineer:

  • Ten or more years of experience working with MySQL.
  • Hands on experience with large installs of Nagios / Icinga.
  • Knowledge of Network Infrastructure including VPNs, Routers, Firewalls, load balancing, and Switches.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with scripting languages, automation tools, and performance tuning.
  • Ability to prioritize and execute tasks independently.
  • Ability to present complex data solution ideas in an understandable and relate-able fashion.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Experience deploying systems, software, and configuration changes.
  • Proficient analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to translate the business and application needs into solution architecture requirements and design.
  • Appreciation of risk management, change management, and configuration management.
  • Ability to integrate various technologies into complete solutions.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience managing and configuring enterprise-wide databases.
